Long Weekend Secured: Friday Confirmed as May Day Holiday

The Ministry of the Interior has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a statutory public holiday to mark May Day, also known as Workers’ Day.

In a statement issued on April 27, 2026, and signed by the Interior Minister, Mr Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Ministry asked the public to observe the day across the country.

“The general public is hereby informed that Friday, 1st May 2026, marks Workers Day (May Day), which is a statutory public holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement said.

May Day is recognised worldwide as a day to celebrate the contributions of workers. In Ghana, it is marked with parades, speeches by labour leaders and government officials, and discussions on working conditions.

The day also brings workers together and draws attention to the struggles that have shaped the labour movement. Trade unions use the occasion to engage the government on wages, job security and workplace safety.

This year’s observance falls on a Friday, creating a long weekend for workers. It comes at a time when labour unions continue to push for better conditions and fair pay amid economic pressures.

The Trades Union Congress is expected to lead national activities to mark the day.
