Undersea Cable Damage Triggers MTN Ghana Internet Disruptions

MTN Ghana has confirmed that undersea cable cuts off the coast of Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire are disrupting internet connectivity and data services across Ghana and several other countries in the sub-region.

In a customer notice issued on June 27, the telecommunications operator said the damage to the subsea cable infrastructure is affecting internet services, underscoring the critical role international fibre-optic networks play in supporting digital communications across West Africa.

“MTN Ghana would like to inform our customers that undersea cable cuts off the coast of Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire are affecting connectivity and internet services in Ghana and some countries in the subregion,” part of the statement read.

The disruption is expected to impact both consumers and businesses that rely on stable internet connectivity for daily operations, including financial institutions, digital platforms, e-commerce operators, and enterprises dependent on cloud-based services.

MTN Ghana said it is actively engaging its international partners to resolve the issue and restore services as quickly as possible.

“We are actively engaging our international partners to resolve the issue as soon as possible,” the company added.

MTN Ghana apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused and assured subscribers that efforts are underway to address the fault and restore normal service levels. The company did not provide a specific timeline for the full restoration of services but said it would continue to keep customers updated as the situation develops.
