President Mahama suspends activities, declares 3-day mourning after helicopter crash
President John Dramani Mahama has suspended all his scheduled activities and programmes for the rest of the week following a tragic helicopter crash on Wednesday that claimed the lives of eight people.
In a press statement issued by Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu (MP), the government announced three days of national mourning beginning today, Thursday, 7 August 2025.
As a mark of respect for the victims, the Chief of Staff earlier in the day directed that all flags across the country fly at half-mast until further notice.
The President expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended his condolences to the families of the deceased.
The statement urged the nation to observe the mourning period with solemnity and reflection.
Meanwhile, another statement issued by the Government Spokesman indicated that Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang had led a team of senior government officials, national executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the Military High Command to formally inform the families of the eight individuals who lost their lives in a helicopter crash earlier today.
The Vice President visited the homes of the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and the Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator. Alhaji Minuru Limuna.
The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, and the NDC National Chairman, Johnson Aseidu Nketiah led another team to Koforidua to inform and offer condolences to the mother and family of Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence.
Two additional teams have been dispatched to the homes and families of the helicopter crew in Takoradi, the NDC Vice Chairman, Samuel Sarpong and the Deputy Director General of NADMO, Samuel Aboagye.
