GHS, WHO to roll out HPV vaccination

The Ghana Health Service (GHS), in partnership with the World Health Organisation (WHO), will roll out a routine HPV vaccination campaign on October 7, 2025, targeting girls aged 9 to 14 years.

Previously introduced in 2013 with a three-dose schedule, the HPV vaccine will now be given as a lifetime single dose to protect against high-risk HPV types that cause cervical cancer and genital warts.

Addressing the media on Monday, September 29, the EPI Programmes Manager with the Ghana Health Service, Dr Selorm Kutsoati, stated that the vaccine will be available at health facilities nationwide, including weighing centres, after the five-day campaign.

“We have learnt so much from the pilot, we’re going to look at an age-based strategy. We’re not going to do the grade-based again.

Dr. Kutsoati, “We’re targeting girls aged 9 to 14 years. We intend to start the vaccination on October 7. We will have a 5-day campaign, and the vaccination will enter routine immunisation in schools. We are targeting almost 2.5 girls. We’re targeting about 440,000 girls for the routine immunisation.”
